THANK YOU to the Stone Soup Campaign Sponsors!

The Hunger Resource Network Board of Directors thanks the generous sponsors of the Stone Soup fundraising campaign.  Their contributions, along with the donations of so many, enable HRN to continue to provide protein in the form of frozen chicken to local food pantries and soup kitchens.  We will do this by distributing 126,000 pounds of chicken to more than 100 recipient agencies at our next Community Outreach Day on Saturday, March 18th from 7 – 10 am at Sunset Foods in Northbrook. We hope to see you there.

Community Outreach Day, Saturday, November 12th

Hunger Resource Network, UL and Feed6 collaborating to supply local pantries and soup kitchens with 50K meals and 126K pounds of chicken

Northbrook, Ill., Nov. 2, 2016 – Hunger Resource Network (HRN), UL (Underwriters Laboratories) and Feed6 will prepare and distribute 50K meals and 126K pounds of chicken (the protein portion of 252K meals) to more than 100 Chicago-area food pantries, homeless shelters and soup kitchens on Saturday, November12th from 7 am to 2pm at UL headquarters in Northbrook.

Over 340 community volunteers will be involved to take a huge bite out of hunger.  More than 240 UL employee volunteers will pack nutritious macaroni and cheese meals from Feed6 and another 100 volunteers from local neighborhoods, organizations and businesses will distribute the chicken provided by HRN to representatives of the 100 food banks that come to the event to pick up their share. To honor our veterans on this Veterans’ Day weekend, they will be supplying many agencies that ensure our veterans are fed.  Please note that no meals or chicken will be distributed directly to individuals.

This Community Outreach Day is the 8th sponsored by Hunger Resource Network over the past several years and the first done in collaboration with UL and Feed6. The event is made possible in part by the hospitality of UL in allowing HRN to use their headquarters’ campus as the distribution point.

HRN, UL and Feed6 share a common goal to help alleviate hunger in our communities.  They are also passionate about providing nutritious meals to those in need.  This is why Hunger Resource Network purchases protein in the form of frozen chicken to distribute and Feed6 includes many vitamins and nutrients in its meal packages.

“With the help of our core volunteers, and the support of our generous partners and sponsors,” said Bill Kanatas, co-founder of Feed6, “we are proud to have been involved in packing nearly 2.9M nutritious meals that benefited local food agencies. We are proud of our new partnership with Hunger Resource Network and look forward to making a dent in hunger together here in Illinois.”

Hunger continues to be a significant problem in our communities: one of every eight people in America (13% of the population) are food-insecure, the need is great.  While the 126K pounds of chicken and 50K meal packs seems significant, this food distribution fills no more than a two-week need in our local communities.

“Every day, we hear about people who are hungry, but you don’t have to go to a third world country to see hunger,” said Dan Jariabka, President of Hunger Resource Network. “Hunger is everywhere! It’s in our communities and in our neighborhoods today and it will continue to be here tomorrow, unless we choose to make a difference. It’s why Hunger Resource Network is here.  I’m honored to be associated with HRN directors and volunteers, and grateful for their desire to help those in need.  Join us and let’s do this together!”

Hunger Resource Network Makes a 50K Meal Connection to Pacific Garden Mission

Members of Hunger Resource Network, Feed6, the Northbrook Chamber of Commerce and Pacific Garden Mission came together to pack and deliver 50,000 meals for those in need.

On Thursday, August 25th, the Northbrook Chamber of Commerce sponsored a meal packing event at the Hilton Chicago Northbrook. Over 250 volunteers helped pack more than 50,000 nutritionally-based meals with the ingredients provided by Feed6. Hunger Resource Network contacted Pacific Garden Mission, one of the largest and oldest homeless shelters in the Chicago area, to be the sole recipient of the meals.

The collaboration between the Northbrook Chamber, the Feed6 team, the Hilton, Hunger Resource Network and Pacific Garden Mission resulted in the speedy delivery of 50K+ meals to the Mission where they will be served over the upcoming weeks. It was a rewarding and inspiring day for all involved.

Sincere Thanks to the Evanston Lighthouse Rotary Club – Taking a Big Bite Out of Hunger

The Taste of Evanston event, sponsored by the Evanston Lighthouse Rotary Club this summer, was so successful that they were able to present two checks for $8500 each to Hunger Resource Network and the Hillside Food Pantry.

At Hunger Resource Network, this generous contribution will be used to purchase protein in the form of frozen chicken for those in need. We will be able to provide the protein portion of over 30,000 meals with these funds as we distribute and allocate it to more than 100 food pantries and shelters in the Chicago area.

We are grateful to everyone at the Evanston Lighthouse Rotary Club who helped make the event happen. You truly know how to take a BIG BITE OUT of HUNGER!
