FAQs

Q). Why is the Hunger Resource Network different from food banks and other food distribution channels?
A). Hunger Resource Network connects businesses and volunteers who are looking for a way to assist agencies that assist those in need. We go beyond food — where most food banks stop. If an organization is in need of toiletries, linens or other items, we can work with them to collect donations or possibly make purchases at a discount.

Q). What makes Hunger Resource Network unique?
A). First, Hunger Resource Network is an all volunteer organization, so there are no salaries being paid to operating personnel, including board members. Second, we are building a model to be used by anyone wanting to assist those in need. Third, we are not limited geographically to specific service areas. Fourth, we work with agencies and their many needs, not just food. We believe that the people served by these agencies are hungry for many things in addition to food – toiletries, linens, day-to-day essentials and so forth.

Q). What geographic area does the Hunger Resource Network service?
A). Our Business Partners are local, regional, as well as national and include food-based, non-food-based businesses, and service suppliers. Recipient Agencies are currently located all over the greater Chicago area.

Q). How can I get involved?
A). If you are interested in assisting the Hunger Resource Network, please email us or join us for one of our meetings. For our open meeting information, please click on the following link - Open Meeting Information

Meetings take place from 7 pm to 8:30 pm at 3025 Walters Avenue, Northbrook, IL 60062.

Businesses – One way is to donate excess inventory, food goods, supplies, etc. Set a standard for your company and become a volunteer group.

Individuals – Small appliances in working order, clothing in good shape, toiletries and linens are always needed by recipient agencies. If you have time, assist with pick-ups from a business partner and/or deliveries to one of the recipient agencies, either on a regular basis or on an as-needed basis – you decide.

Q). Does the Hunger Resource Network accept cash and gift card donations?
A). Yes. Donations of cash and gift cards are gratefully accepted.

Q). Are donations deductible for income tax purposes?
A). Hunger Resource Network is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit agency. However, you should always consult with a tax professional when dealing with the deductibility of your donations.

Q). What types of Businesses are involved with the Hunger Resource Network?
A). We have a page listing our Business Partners who are working with the Hunger Resource Network. They cover a variety of industries and are both food and non-food related businesses – all who want to help make a difference.

Q). How are the donations distributed?
A). Donations are collected by volunteers/volunteer groups who deliver them to Recipient Agencies. We try to minimize the distance between the donor business and the recipient agency to promote strong community citizenship for the donor. The Recipient Agencies then distribute the donations to those they serve.

Q). What types of things do agencies need?
A). Food, toiletries, clothing, small appliances in working order and furniture are a sample of what Hunger Resource Network can distribute. We have a page that you can check titled “Agency Needs” .

Q). Where does the Hunger Resource Network get its donations?
A). In-kind donations are received from Business Partners as well as individuals wanting to make a difference in the lives of those in need. Financial donations are also made to Hunger Resource Network by funding organizations such as community clubs, financial organizations, and individuals.

Q). Do your programs extend beyond food products?
A). Yes. As part of our network, we are able to connect Recipient Agencies with non-food needs. But we can’t do it without the help of our Business Partners and individual volunteers and volunteer groups.
